Glossary
Pressure washer is an appliance used to remove unwanted dust from the surface of objects using high pressure water. They must be operated with help of safety instructions.
Glossary of terms for pressure washer
Adjustable Pressure Regulator
Used to vary the pressure of the spray.
Adjustable Spray Wand:
This spray wand allows users to adjust the angle of the water stream.
Axial Cam
Cam is used to change the rotary motion of the engine into a pump’s pistons reciprocating motion. These are less expensive.
Axles
A shaft on which a wheel rotates and they need to stronger to support the weight of the machine and to maintain balance of the machine.
Belt Drive
This drive uses belts and pulleys to slow the pump’s speed. As pump is isolated from heart of the engine and bearings are not much wearied they ensure long life. Additional friction caused by belts and pulleys results in loss of efficiency more maintenance is required to adjust the belt.
Cavitation
Cavitation is caused when air enters the pump causing damage as the pump expands and contracts. This process is also called starving the pump.
Ceramic and Non-ceramic plungers
Ceramic plungers have excellent properties that tends to be extremely smooth thus extending the seals life. Also they do not wear. But Non-ceramic plungers will wear and hence reduce the life of the seals.
Chemical Injector
Here chemicals and soaps can be used along with water stream, thus making the cleaning easier and faster. To control the flow of the chemical it works in harmony with the pressure band. Straight wand devices have to switch to a soap nozzle for drawing chemical.
De Longhi
DeLonghi are renowned for their design which describes the quality of the products. Also they have a rich heritage of Italian design.
Direct Drive
This direct washer system connects the pump directly to the engine. Pump spins with same speed as engine. They are economic since it has few moving parts. However the bearing gets more damaged and reduces the life span of the pump.
Engine
Engine is the energy source that drives the high-pressure pump. They can be diesel which is more durable and have longer lifetime, gasoline which is more comfortable for outdoor use and easily portable, electric motor for indoor use and hydraulic power.
EZ Start Unloader
EZ Start unloader helps to start the engine easily by eliminating pressure in the pump. It is more useful in electric based models.
Frame
Frame supports the power washer working components. Frames are painted with powder coat for longer life and ensure minimal risk of rusting. Most models are constructed using aluminum or stainless steel frames.
Gearbox Pumps
This has the gear reduction box between the motor and the pump. They can run at half the speed of direct drive pumps. One advantage is the less valve and seal replacement and hence lower maintenance expense.
Handles
Almost all pressure washers come with at least one handle. Some comes with front and some with rear handles which provides convenience in moving and also loading into the back of a truck. Vital components are provided given added protection.
Homelite
Homelite is world-class leader in pressure washers and have quality consumer. Their success is worldwide because they focus on powerful brands, exceptional people and innovative products
HP
Horse Power is the measurement of working capabilities of a pressure washer’s engine.
High-Pressure Pump
This pump uses water from an external source and pushes them with great force to produce high pressures in the range 3000 to 5000 PSI. Some washers come with industrial-grade having three plunger (triplex) pumps and some with two plungers (duplex) pumps.
Nilfisk
Nilfisk is world class manufacturer of cleaning equipments. When professional cleaning is considered nilfisk products range meets the demand. They have wide experience in cleaning.
Nozzle
The nozzle is present at the end of the wand to create the pressure. Nozzles come in different spray patterns affecting the width and strength of the spray. For example there is 40-degree nozzle, 25-degree and 15-degree. 0-degree nozzle can cut into wood and cause damage.
OHV
This refers the overhead valve (the valve is placed at the top of the piston). This technology improves efficiency, reduces emissions and cools running. They have long life and are easier to start. Also it is more expensive. They control intake and exhaust valves on internal combustion engines.
Plungers
It is the moving part of a pressure washer pump travelling back and forth between rubber seals which creates the pressure and flow of a pressure washing system.
PSI
PSI is pounds per square inch which determines pressure being directly applied on the cleaning surface. The machine’s pressure is directly responsible for breakage of the bond between the object being cleaned and the debris.
Pressure Washer Gauge
Pressure gauges combine both a pressure gauge and a chemical seal into one unit. The diagram elements associated with gauge are convoluted membranes that are clamped between two flanges and are circular shaped. The power washer exercises a force on the diagram.
Pressure Washer Hose
There are two types of pressure hose namely, wire-braid high pressure hose and non-marking pressure hose. Both are strong enough for up to 4500 PSI.
Purge
Purge process eliminates air from a pressure washer making the engine start easier.
Safety Relief Valve
It is the designated weak point in the pressure washer. When the unloader malfunctions, the safety relief valve gets opened and relieves system’s accumulated pressure safely.
Thermal Relief
This process reduces the high temperature water inside washer pump caused by spray gun trigger when it is closed. Internal pump damage is prevented.
Trigger Gun
This gun controls the flow of water. The flow gets activated by squeezing the trigger and when the trigger is released the flow gets stopped.
Unloader
Unloader relives the water pressure inside the pump whenever spray flow is blocked. It also returns the water flow to the gun when the operator is ready to clean again.
Wand
Variable pressure wand and straight through wand are the two common types of wands. The variable pressure wand can twist the handle and reduce the spray pressure.
